The double wall cake board is definitely more sturdy. The best way to describe it is the double wall is comprised of a layer of paperboard followed by a layer of fluted paperboard then another layer of paperboard. Another layer of fluted paper, then the final sheet of paperboard. I like to describe it like a club sandwich. The single wall cake board works fine for cupcakes.
